The hero ingredient in our skin rejuvenating Korean beauty line r3 Skincare is Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) – also known as polypeptides – which is considered one of the biggest breakthroughs in anti-aging. The discovery of EGF - a string of amino acid proteins that occur naturally in our body and kick-start the skin healing and collagen production process– by Italian biologist Rita Levi-Montalcini and US biochemist Stanley Cohen, saw them awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1986.

EGF Explained
EGF is a single-chain non-glycosylated protein that naturally occurs in our skin cells. A healing factor for the body its purpose is to heal and repair skin by promoting DNA synthesis and cell proliferation. When EGF binds to its receptor EGFR on the surface of the cell, the two kick start signaling pathways that prompt cell proliferation, differentiation and survival along with the repair of corneal, intestinal, and mucosal wounds. By stimulating the growth of new skin cells and the division of keratinocytes and fibroblasts which then synthesize fibrous proteins to boost skin collagen and elastin, EGF enhances the skin barrier, allowing it to retain moisture for healthier, smoother, softer and more radiant looking skin. And because EGF inhibits melanin production during the wound healing process, it also improves hyperpigmentation, acne and facial scarring.
